Pump Iron? Ya!

Feeling blah? Check your iron levels. Iron deficiency, called anemia in severe cases, causes fatigue. Red blood cells need iron to carry oxygen throughout the body, and iron helps muscles use oxygen. Yet 75 percent of women up to age 49 don’t get enough iron through their diet.

Meat, poultry and fish are the best sources — animal-based iron is absorbed two to three times more than nonmeat iron. Fortified cereals, lentils and beans are the best plant-based sources. Vitamin C can as much as double iron absorption, so pair black beans with salsa or take your iron pill to increase your intake.

"I have an iron deficiency. You can tell by how wrinkled my clothes are." Jarod Kitz
