These belles of the ball offer a rich source of phytochemicals called polyphenols — powerful antioxidants that have been associated with a range of health benefits, from the lowering of cancer risk to the prevention of cardiovascular disease (among other things). Blueberries, specifically, have been shown to offer substantial cardio-protective benefits. They’re also a good source of vitamin C, potassium and fiber. To get the most health benefits, enjoy them fresh or frozen. Sprinkle them atop oatmeal or add frozen blueberries to a fruit smoothie. Or simply snack on a bowl of blueberries mixed with your other favorite fruits.
