So much of being successful with your do-over, we believe, isn’t just about what actions you take, but about your mindset before and while you’re taking those actions. One of the key truths that you have to wrap your brain around is this: Do-overs are doable, but there aren’t shortcuts. Your brain chemistry can work in your favor, so it’s not as hard as you may think. But you really can’t slip up. That’s where the secret lies: When you retrain your brain, you’ll decrease the chances of making mistakes, acting on impulses, and giving your brain a reason to direct you toward that plate of fried potato skins. You’ll have taught your brain how to get high without the damage that comes from some of the addictive toxins. You do not want to train your brain and then have it rewired by succumbing to temptation. That one slipup enables more moments of feeling like you failed. That said, if you do have a slipup — and many do — forgive yourself fast and get back on the health wagon. You deserve a do-over, and you can have one.
