Ease Into Meditation

Don’t let youth be wasted on the young! You can live young and stay sharp as you age if you practice proven lifestyle strategies — like eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and staying physically active — and get comfy on a meditation cushion. Meditating regularly may help to preserve your brain’s gray matter, the tissue with all those neurons that govern thinking and memory. As if that’s not enough, some studies have also shown that meditating helps preserve white matter, which connects different parts of the brain. White, gray…it all matters! If the thought of meditating makes you squirm, humor us and try this: Find a place to sit that’s quiet and comfortable — a comfy chair, a favorite pillow or, heck, even a hiding spot in the bathroom if alone time is hard to find. Set a timer for five minutes, let yourself settle in, and start paying attention to your breathing. When thoughts or sensations arise, notice them without judging them and gently bring your attention back to your breath. When you hear the timer ring, open your eyes. Guess what? You’ve just meditated!
