Smiling is the ultimate ice-breaker and the key to making new friends.

“You’re never fully dressed without a smile…” Annie certainly knew it. Here’s why you should too: Offering someone a genuine smile can help you forge a new friendship or spark a new romance. Why? People respond better to displays of genuine positive emotion. But the key word here is genuine. In this case, “fake it ‘till you make it” won’t fly. The same research looked at how people respond to insincere smiles and found that we’re hardwired to spot fake ones (didn’t we all learn that in high school years ago?!). If you’re full up on friends and you’re in a fine romance already (thank you very much), then consider these reasons to get your grin on: Smiling can reduce stress, and people who smile the most have happier lives, happier marriages and fewer personal setbacks. It looks like Louis Armstrong was tellin’ the truth when he sang “when you’re smilin’, the whole world smiles with you.”

A smile is the light in your window that tells others that there is a caring, sharing person inside.”
