Avocados for Your Heart and Overall Health

Avocados help improve cholesterol and triglyceride levels and lower blood sugar and blood pressure — all of which counteracts metabolic syndrome. Inside an avocado’s plain exterior lie a wealth of vitamins, unique heart-healthy fats, anti-inflammatory phytonutrients, and abundant fiber (10 grams in one cup!). Avocados help your body absorb nutrients from other foods, such as carotenoids (think carrots, cantaloupe, sweet potato, and kale). The best part? Avocados are delicious and satisfying.  Avocados are fantastic on sandwiches, wraps, or burritos in place of mayonnaise or cheese and can substitute for oil in salad dressing. Avocado on whole grain toast with a squeeze of lemon and a little sprinkle of salt makes a great breakfast or snack. Blend avocados with frozen berries, banana, and almond or soy milk for a deliciously creamy smoothie.

“The avocado is a food without rival among the fruits, the veritable fruit of paradise.” David Fairchild
